As we surge forward through the digital age, the way in which we communicate becomes more and more transparent. We have endless access to information, and we are able to connect quicker and easier with our clients and fellow employees. This can be a very good thing, but it also means that customers and co-workers have increased access to us; just as we have more access to them. It is pivotal now more than ever to better ways of engaging with our colleagues so that we can continue to evolve with the world around us.
As we change and grow, so do those around us. If we don’t keep a pulse on the heartbeat of communication, messages can get mixed and connections can break down very quickly. Knowing your clientele and the best ways to interact with them makes all the difference in your business. As the old saying goes, at the center of every organization is its people. When we learn to how to truly reach each other, we can interact in more meaningful and impactful ways.
A powerful way to do this is through a Personality Profile.
Personality Profiles are powerful tools that help us get to know ourselves, our co-workers, and our customers better. The more we know ourselves, the easier it is to figure out how we best fit into the puzzle of the world around us.
Before we dive too deep into Personality Profiles, it’s important to understand how our conscious and unconscious minds interact.
Unconscious Motivations for Business Owners
With our conscious mind, we contain our thoughts and memories, as well as the feelings, beliefs, and desires we are aware of at all times. The conscious mind deals with the rational thought processes that we have at the forefront of our human experience. With our conscious mind, observations are consciously observed and pondered.
Our unconscious mind holds psychological content that we are not aware of – the primary source of our behavior. It holds feelings, beliefs, patterns, actions, and suppressed positive or negative memories such as positive and negative emotions and traumas.
It is a misconception that we rule our lives with our conscious thoughts and decisions. We like to think that if we ignore what is uncomfortable, and focus on what we want, we can overcome anything. What we don’t realize is that we cannot function solely on intentions and willpower. By pushing experiences and feelings away, we only send these to the depths of our unconscious.
This is why the beliefs our unconscious holds don’t correspond with the beliefs we hold in our conscious mind. It makes it extremely difficult to behave in accordance with our true selves because we have essentially denied and pushed parts of it away.
Meanwhile, our unconscious beliefs (the stuff we pushed away) develop coping mechanisms. This in turn instructs our conscious mind, which then dictates our behavior.
We can certainly intend to behave in a certain way. Meanwhile though, our unconscious mind is triggered by beliefs that are stored in our unconscious mind, influencing the way we experience our current circumstances. We unconsciously project past feelings onto current circumstances all the time. This subsequently changes our intended behavior. And because we are not aware that our unconscious mind is the cause, we tend to blame the reason behind this changed behavior on the other person or the circumstance (a.k.a. the trigger). Because we feel bad about this unintended behavior, we lament the person or the circumstances, while the actual cause is still seated in the belief system of our unconscious mind.
It’s not easy to blame ourselves. But it’s impossible to blame ourselves for something we are not aware of.
We don’t realize our part in it, and therefore think we are the victim; that other people or situations cause us to act and feel a certain way. We don’t realize we can take back power by addressing the root cause within us.
How a Personality Profile Can Help You Run Your Business
When my clients read their Personality Profile, a lot falls into place for them. The content hits home. It is described as a welcoming eye-opener with solutions.
This accurate and detailed report is based on the teachings of Carl Gustav Jung. It is designed to reveal your:
- Unique Core Characteristics
- Motives
- Recurring Habit Patterns
- Authentic Qualities
- Latent Talent
The analysis brings insight into original and acquired characteristics, ways of feeling, thinking, and acting. It also reveals the connection between conscious and unconscious motivations, capabilities, blind spots, and even your soul’s mission.
In business, more self-knowledge brings you peace of mind and helps you to grow confidence and maximize your output. This information offers tailored advice that will lead to further personal development options. Consider this example:
Hans, a business owner, dealt with restlessness and inner pressure because he was not meeting his goals. He was challenged by circumstances that he felt he had no control over. He believed that bad luck was holding him back. He could not find the right colleagues for collaborations and he always had challenging clients. Hans possessed a high IQ and peers could not keep up with his fast-running mind. He was considering changing careers.
His Personality Profile helped him to see how his influence over his circumstances – influence he was projecting without even realizing it. The analysis confirmed his qualities which made him feel stronger. When it came time to address his blind spots he was primed and ready to see with these unprecedented clarity. The report also offered information about his unrealized talents, which were connected to interests and dreams he held.
This invaluable knowledge gave him a brand new perspective, confidence, and a feeling of control. Several sessions helped Hans let go of forceful behavior and operate with more natural characteristics. As you can images, this alleviated a lot of stress. His relationships with others equally changed for the better.
Let’s leave Hans for a moment and come back to what a Personality Profile can mean for you and your teams. You will absolutely be able to build better partnership once you have more insight into yourself. Knowledge of others starts with knowledge of self.
The same revelations into your own psyche will guide you in gathering support. By knowing your blind spots and what “makes you tick” you’ll know what other personality types you mesh well with. Most important, you’ll be able to see what a team may expect from you and what talents would complement your own.
Knowing Your Personality Blind Spots Can Help Your Business
Let’s talk a little more about blind spots. Blind spots are characteristics and/or skills (and even circumstances) that activate each other. We are not aware of these as the term would suggest. In a case where two characteristics are connected as a blind spot, we may be aware of both characteristics, but we are not able to recognize that they influence each other. We can confirm their existence but have no idea how or when one is activating the other and vice versa. Consider another example:
Matthew was experiencing anxiety and a constant feeling of aggression but was not aware at all that this inner tension was displaying itself outwardly. He knew something wasn’t right because he found himself becoming suddenly aggravated/irritated and lashing out disproportionately to a given situation. He couldn’t make sense of it. Matthew’s Personality Profile showed that he naturally had an extraordinarily strong personal will and urge to only do what he enjoys.
This need caused inner tension, although he did not understand the cause of this tension. All he knew was that no activity could ease his constant restlessness or bring him inner peace. Another consequence was that the tension he carried around caused negative reactions from those around him. As he was not aware of the “vibe” he was giving off, he could not make sense as to why people gave him “attitude.”
Due of the nature of the blind spot, Matthew could not make the connection between himself and the reactions of others. It was difficult, nearly impossible for him to recognize. As a result, he felt a lack of control over the matter, which only exacerbated his existing frustration and inner tension.
It helped him a lot to understand and accept this process rationally. We worked on finding out what his preferences, likes, and dislikes were – the ways he enjoyed spending his time. He started to use the tools I provided when he found himself in situations where he had no choice but to do something he did not prefer. To cap it all off, he even found an outlet for his inner tension: SWIMMING. After understanding the process and gaining a new outlet, you could say he was able to live more fluidly and in flow with life instead of confused by it.
I’m sure you can only imagine the difference this made in his relationships with his colleagues and his private life!
